I know most of my friends love to read, and most of us don't have as much money for books as we'd like, so I thought I'd pass this along:

Through Sunday the 27th, you can download the books for free, and they have at least two books that I've recommended to people. A Shadow in Summer by Daniel Abraham is in there, which I liked, and so is Cherie Priest's Four and Twenty Blackbirds. I like that they are actually free, no DRM, so you can download and save them (or print them) and read them whenever. I'm going to get them all, since I never know when I will need a book at work.

Got on a wild hair at work today and went back and read through all my D&D group's journals. It took a long time and I probably should be finishing The Golden Compass, since I'm supposed to go see it with some people I work with. Yet another good children's book that will be lobotomized, I'm sure, but I want to see the panserbjorne on the screen.

But I digress. So I went back and read all the journals and quotes and I missed you all SO MUCH I almost cried. I missed that time in my life, and all the people I had around me that I didn't appreciate as much as I should and now everyone is all scattered. I missed having a group of friends that were so close I could just walk over and see them and I missed having a game to work on. Being DM sometimes drove me crazy because I felt very responsible for it but god I miss it sometimes.

I don't know if it's the winter or what but lately I've been very dissatisfied with my life. It's safe but it isn't progressing at all. I looked back over 2007 and realized I had nothing to show for it. I didn't create anything or do anything worthwhile. I started this job because I was at a point where I needed something safe and undemanding while I figured out what else to do and now I'm stuck. I'm scared to quit and move on and I'm not sure what would make me happy. I'd really like to get at least my Masters degree because I feel like I failed because I don't have it. I'm worried though that I've been out of school too long to go back, and anyway what would I do with a masters in ancient history that is any different or better than what I'm doing now?

The real point of this post is that I'm thinking of all my friends, even if it's been a while since I saw or talked to them, and missing them today.

Everyone loves gifts, and many also love giving them, so it's time for one of my favorite memes.

Make a public post on your journal with a list of 10 things that you would want from an LJ friend. The items can be anything, from graphics and e-cards, to real things that you would receive in the mail. Anyone who thinks that they would be able to help with any of those items can comment on the post.

1. New icons! I got sorted to Slytherin over at Hogwarts Elite (sorry, my html-fu is too weak to get that to show up right) so now I need new icons to reflect my inner snakeness. I don't care if they aren't just for me (though icons just for me are extra special). I could also use a sig tag, though I don't know how to use them.

2. Recipes for things that are good and easy to cook. It seems like we have tacos, spaghetti, and frozen pizza way too often just because that is all I am moved to cook. Bonus points if they are also healthy (we eat meat but no pork).

3. Books! New, used, loans, recs, doesn't matter- I always want to hear about a good book, especially if it's something I wouldn't normally pick up.

4. Song lists. I really want to start going to the gym more often and I need fresh playlists for my ipod (I especially like themed mixes).

5. Fun mail! I love to get mail, especially if it's got little surprises in it. So much better than a post box full of bills and junk mail.

6. Ghost stories. I collect ghost stories, whether in books or personal. I especially want ones from other countries because these are really hard to get in the states.

OK, that's all I can think of, really. I might add some more later. Everyone post your list so your friends can spread the holiday love.

For all of you who may have once lived in Roanoke- Good News! Our beloved Star has returned to being all white. One night it was red and blue, as it has been since 9/11/01, and the next, with little fanfare, back to the classic white. It's very exciting.

Also, I have been obsessively coating my hands with vanilla sugar hand sanitizer today. Not sure why, but I think it has something to do with my job sucking and my dread of calling my parents. At least I smell nice.

I guess I should post something that isn't a comment or a quiz. Hmm...

Last night, as a special treat, I took the lovely Megan out on a date. We went to see Phantom of the Opera. It's very pretty. Almost melodramatic, but an A.L.W. musical set in an opera in Paris in the 1850's has a really hard time going over the top. I'd never seen the musical, so I got to enjoy it for what it was- also, some of the stuff from the book makes it into the movie that wasn't in the staged part.

I HATE looking for a job. HATE IT. I am forced to face the fact that despite four years of hard work, I can't really DO anything, and as far as jobs go, I'd be better off if I'd gone to secretary school or learned to be a plumber. The want ads are full of things requiring skills I don't have. And is it just me, or do companies intentionally jerk applicants around and make them do degrading and asinine things? Why can't I just talk to a human? Is their time so valuable? Why must I instead fill out some jack-off survey meant to distill all my skills, weaknesses, assets, and work ethic into 12 screens of highly subjective questions? Add to this the fact that I really need a 20-hour work week that makes around $200 and that I was essentially fired from my last job, and I begin to feel that Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy are better bets than Monster.

Anyway. Today I fix up my resume. This is it. This is for the big money, the only job I actually want.

However, I am very happy to have my gaming back up and running. I wish I'd heard back from Hollins so I could get that together, but I'm still looking forward to doing that in February.

AND IT SNOWED! I forgot to post that! It snowed like an inch on Sunday night- very exciting, first time all year.

I got my History Book Club stuff yesterday. Very exciting, pretty new books. Hours and hours of geeky entertainment.

OK, best get going on this resume. Where to start?

I am looking for two or three people who would like to join a regular (or semi-regular) RPG that is not D&D. Options are Vampire: Dark Ages (involves, obviously, vampires in an historical setting), or Seventh Sea, based loosely on 16th century Europe (has pirates and stuff)- has as an added bonus the fact that I already own the books, but the disadvantage that I have never played it.

I am sad that the D&D game never finished. I don't know if I even could finish it now, even given twelve solid hours of serious playing. IT suffered greatly from my senior year, and for that I'm sorry. I wish you guys could have seen the first one, when I had time and energy to plan. Anyway, I want a change of pace, something different and smaller, more personal. So let me know if you are interested. I can try to find some info about the games for you guys.

I had a very good 22nd birthday. Megan and I went shopping downtown and out to dinner and she made me a really good cake. I just don't like having a summer birthday because most of the people I'd like to share it with are scattered all over and can't come spend it with me and have cake, etc. On Sunday we went and got matching birthday presents, which haven't healed yet (heh...ask to see it...) and we had dinner out to celebrate Megan's birthday, which was Monday, since she had to work until almost 8.

I start my teaching job in a little less than a month. I filled out all my paperwork and got finger printed on Monday, but I can't get my license. Hollins has a hold on my account, most of which is from the library shit I took care of more than a month ago but it hasn't gotten around to the prehistoric lizard brain of the Business Office, so I can't get a transcript request processed, even though I got one before. The real kicker was that I requested the transcript before the 4th of July weekend, and it wasn't until I went to pick it up that they even mentioned that they couldn't run it because of a hold on it. How long was I suposed to wait for that crucial piece of information?

Anyway, I guess I shouldn't complain about that too much. Spot is basically all better and consuming fuzzy mice at an alarming rate. I've worked my way through most of Hordes of the Underdark (so fun...Epic-Level feats and equipment and such...I just wish I could play online or whatever so I could really experience it all). I started reading "The Bone Woman", which looked so cool but was really disappointing to me. The thing I miss most about TV are my true-crime shows I used to watch all the time, especially Cold Case Files. Yesterday I spent a long time starting to reread "House of Leaves", probably my overall favorite book ever. It isn't as spell-binding as it was the first time- I remember when I first got it it was all I wanted to do- but I am far more able to understand the intricate layers and pick up on resonances. I'm even beginning to see how the narrative layers fit together. I also want to write some more fiction. I have a few, maybe three or so, things I really want to write, I just never seem to get started. I should really be planning my curriculum, but I don't know what on earth I will do with the advanced students at all.

I should get going.
